The Skinny on Proper Hydration


Are you properly hydrated?  Would you know if you are?  Here are some of the symptoms of dehydration:

  • Tired
  • Fatigue
  • Hungry
  • Constipation
  • Dark Urine (urine should be clear or pale yellow)
  • Obesity
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Wrinkly or Saggy Skin

Our bodies are 60% water and some parts of our bodies are over 80% water (blood is 83%), being properly hydrated is one of the most important things you can do for yourself.  Most people think drinking 6 to 8 glasses of water a day means they are properly hydrated.

Finding Your ‘Why’ and Goal Setting

How does a person find their ‘why’?  And by ‘why’ I mean that thing that motivates you to go above and beyond.  The thing that makes you get up and dust yourself off and get back in the ring.  That one thing that pushes you to achieve more than you ever dreamed.


Infinity and beyondMaybe I am going through a midlife crisis but I want the things I do with my life from here on out to have meaning and purpose, to enrich not only myself and family but everyone I meet.  Are my goals too lofty?


Maybe but I think they are attainable. The first step is to define my main goals – I want to be healthy, I want to have financial freedom, I want to help others be healthy and have financial freedom, and I want to be truly happy.  Now those things may sound a little vague but they are a good first step.  As an instant gratification junkie, long term goals are difficult!


The second step is where I am now and that is taking each goal, breaking it down into smaller and smaller goals – yearly, monthly, weekly and daily – and writing them down. The more specific the goal and the steps, the better chance one has of achieving that goal.  You have to be able to see it, smell it, taste it, feel it! So as I am writing, I am very specifically visualizing my financial goals, my health goals, my service goals and my career goals. I have tried this a few times in the past and was never able to see clearly the steps needed to get me from point A to point B.  It is difficult to define success in a step by step process especially if you haven’t had many successes. This is where NIKKEN comes in to save the day!

Exercise & Energy

In my last blog post, Instant Gratification & A Little Science, I said that I would be adding a new habit, exercise, to all my healthy life changes.  I also promised a selfie while exercising and I always try to keep my promises.  So…. here we are, my husband and I.

It was 20 degrees outside and I have no makeup on.  Yes 20 degrees! We were frozen!  Not to mention this is actually our second walk of the morning.  The first was not really exercise per se because we had the dogs with us.  Now I know that there are people who exercise all the time with their dogs but as much as I would like to be one of those tall, beautiful women who jogs perfectly with her ever obedient dog following along stride for stride…..

Sadly I am not one of those people!  I am short, do not yet jog and my dogs are crazy!  When we go outside they think it’s time for an all out sniffing and peeing on everything fest!  They have no manners and are too excited about the world to listen.

Both dogs were rescued and had difficult lives before they adopted us.  Olaf is a recent addition and we know the least about his previous circumstances. I am certain he has never had any formal training in anything. My husband and I are taking classes with him on Saturdays so that he can learn proper behavior and so can we.  It’s going moderately well. I have hope that one day he will be able to walk on a leash next to me instead of running around like a Tasmanian devil while looping the leash around my legs as if they are a weaving loom!

Buddy on the other hand likes to sniff and pee on everything.  That combined with his strength and stubbornness to leave a blade of grass untainted by his urine, makes walking him an exercise in futility.  Needless to say, Buddy is on deck for classes next.

Starting a new habit (like exercise) is extremely difficult.  Everyone knows this.  That is why there are almost 4 million hits on Google for “How to keep your New Year’s resolution” and almost 8 million for “How to keep your New Year’s resolution to exercise”. And while I wish I could tell you I have a secret formula that will help you to change your behavior or with a flourish of my magic wand make you want to exercise everyday and love it – there is no secret formula and I do not have a magic wand.  What I do have is determination, a supportive family and friends, and some pretty amazing tools.

Instant Gratification & A Little Science

I’m an instant gratification kind of woman.  When I buy a gift for someone I rarely wait until the birthday, Christmas, anniversary or whatever event to give it to them. I like video games because if you do good, you get to level up or a new item or unlock the hidden door – right then! I prefer shopping in the store rather than online because waiting for boxes to be delivered is torture! And I love cooking – you put the ingredients together, stand around the stove and stir, then voila! you get something yummy to eat. (Or even worse, drive to the drive thru, order something and it’s handed to you at the next window.)   I think my need for instant gratification is one reason why losing weight is so difficult for me.

But now that I have made the decision to become healthy, I am trying to train my brain to be patient and be excited about the longer goal.  Thank goodness for Vital Balance!  One of the best and most fascinating things about this meal replacement mix from NIKKEN are the medium chain triglycerides!  (Ya I totally just said something sciencey there!)

So basically Vital Balance is directly feeding my brain and helping it to rely on the healthy stuff rather than being fed constantly by sugars!  All I have to do is make sure I have it every morning instead of breakfast and then wait at least an hour before I have anything else to eat or drink besides water!

One thing I have noticed since replacing my breakfast with Vital Balance is that I do not crave carbohydrates as much and I am starting to naturally make better food choices. Like I want salads and vegetables instead of french fries and ice cream! UNBELIEVABLE!  No torture devices were involved. No locks on cupboards or the refrigerator. Carpe Diem!


Normally that would be considered a stupid or careless move.  In my case, it was the perfect thing to do.  It was not a decision made lightly. Without going into all the gory details, let’s just say I am so much happier and my stress-o-meter is no longer bulging.

So now what am I going to do with all my free time?

  • Look for another job?
  • Freelance?
  • Work on more children’s books? (I currently have two published: If I Knew A Flamingo and If I Knew A Polar Bear)
  • Become a starving artist?
  • Train for a marathon?
  • Climb Mt. Everest?

I am going to get healthy, take control of my finances and


How am I going to do this?  It’s so simple!  I am a firm believer in the KISS rule – Keep It Short & Simple. So I’m always looking for an easier way to do things. AND I found one……
